The following illustration shows the wiring and component configuration used to power four separate low voltage LED strip light runs with the ability to dim the LED strips using a traditional wall-dimmer. This is a great setup for residential and commercial installations where a clean, elegant and user-friendly LED strip light installation is desired.

LED strip lights operate on low voltage DC (e.g. 12V/24V), but wall-dimmers are installed in standard line voltage circuits which operate at AC 120 volts (North America / Japan) or 220-240 volts (elsewhere).

Two things must happen for the LED strip lights to work on the dimmer circuit. First, the voltage must be reduced and rectified from the AC line voltage to the lower DC voltage appropriate for the LED strip lights. Second, the dimming signal generated by the wall-dimmer must be interpreted and converted to the corresponding brightness setting on the low voltage DC side.

Waveform Lighting's dimmable power supply units offer the combined functionality of voltage transformation as well as dimming signal conversion and is an essential component in this setup.

This is a common setup for installations such as under-cabinet lighting applications where several short runs of LED strip may be interrupted by appliances or gaps such as stovetops or refrigerators. Note the max power supply capacity of 96 watts, which corresponds to approximately 16.4 ft (5 meters) of LED strip lights.

The unit automatically converts the dimming signal on the AC line voltage side to the appropriate DC dimming signal (PWM) for the LED strip lights. This product is designed to be hard-wired to line voltage wires and should not be used with a standard wall-plug receptacle. INPUT: AC 100-277 V + DIMMING OUTPUT: DC 24V + DIMMING MAX 96 WATTS Most wall-dimmers are designed to be mounted directly into the wall, connecting directly to the lighting circuit wiring inside the wall. Please reference the instructions provided by the wall-dimmer unit for further specific installation instructions. INPUT: DC 24V + DIMMING This LED strip has 16 AWG wires pre-mounted on both ends of the reel. The wire length is 13.8 inches (35 cm) and has tips stripped and tinned for quick and easy connection to power supply leads. This LED strip is configured as a 16.4 ft (5 meter) reel. It can be cut to shorter lengths as needed, in 2 inch (50 mm) increments using a pair of scissors. This configuration shows the entire reel cut into four sections of various lengths. The sections are then rejoined using solderless connector accesories and wires. LED STRIP-TO-STRIP SOLDERLESS CONNECTORPART NUMBER 3071 Solderless connectors are an indispensible accessory for configurations that require reconnecting LED strip sections that have been previously cut. PN 3071 includes plastic connectors on both ends of a 6-inch cable, allowing you to quickly rejoin LED strips in a matter of seconds without the hassle and mess of soldering. This part can also be used to make angled turns as the connector cable is both flexible and durable. Cable Length: 5.9 in (150 mm) LED STRIP-TO-WIRE SOLDERLESS CONNECTORPART NUMBER 3070 Similar to PN 3071, this part includes plastic connectors on just one end of a 6-inch cable, with open leads on the other end. This is a useful accessory item when connecting an LED strip section to another wired component. In this instance, we need to span a long distance to the next LED strip section, so we are using this connector to connect to a wire run (PN 7098). 16 AWG WirePART NUMBER 7098 Our 16 AWG wire is a heavy-duty wire rated for high amperage. Here, we are using it to span a long distance between LED strip sections so that we can connect them to the same power source. The product is sold in 33 ft spools (10 meters) and can be cut to length as needed. The ends should be stripped and connected to the wire ends of PN 3070 using twist-on wire connectors You may also use your own low voltage wire if prferred. Be aware that insufficient wire gauge can lead to voltage drop issues. Oftentimes "speaker wire" can be substituted for LED strip power feeds.PN 3070 can also be bypassed if you are comfortable soldering wires directly onto the LED strip copper pads.
